THE HONORABLE LUCY H. KOH
U.S. DISTRICT COURT FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF CA

President Obama appointed Judge Lucy Haeran Koh to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in June 2010. Judge Koh is the first Asian American U.S. District Judge in the Northern District of California and the first Korean American U.S. District Judge in the United States. Prior to joining the bench, she was a partner at McDermott Will & Emery. She also served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Major Frauds Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles.

She has served on the Asian Pacific Bar Association of Silicon Valley Board of Directors and as Civil Rights Committee Co-Chair, the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Los Angeles Board of Governors, the Boards of Directors of the Korean American Bar Associations of Northern California and Southern California, the Korean American Coalition Board of Directors for the San Francisco Chapter and Los Angeles Chapter, and as an Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute Senior Fellow.

JOHN W. KUO
VARIAN MEDICAL SYSTEMS

John Kuo is the Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Varian. He joined Varian in 2003 as senior counsel, focusing on commercial transactions, securities, corporate governance and M&A, and became GC in 2005. Before Varian, John was General Counsel at BroadVision and held senior legal positions at 3Com Corporation, Acer America Corporation, Baroid Corporation, Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich (now, DLA Piper), and Fulbright & Jaworski. He has worked across three industries – energy, high tech and life sciences.

In 2013, John co-founded the Bay Area Asian American General Counsels Group to help provide networking and support to APA GCs and serve as a voice of our community on issues of concern. He currently serves on the Board of Law Foundation of Silicon Valley, Boalt Hall Alumni Association Board (President) and the Cornell University Council.

John was an Honoree on the 2015 Lawyers of Color Power List and has been awarded with the 2015 Diversity Award from APABA-SV, 2015 Justice in Action Award from the Asian American Legal Education and Defense Fund, 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award from Silicon Valley Business Journal/San Francisco Business Times, and the 2017 In-House Counsel Diversity Leadership Award from NAPABA Partners Network.
