Volunteer Qualifications and Expectations

1. A demonstrated interest/concern for the needs of the Asian and Pacific Islander and low income communities.
2. A commitment of a minimum 10 weeks, across your specific program area. 
3. Must reside within the Bay Area and available to come to the office in-person for all shifts.
4. All legal and client-related work is reserved for those who are of 18+ years.

Available Volunteer Roles

Volunteers at ALA are welcome to explore various topics and programs within ALA’s umbrella. Volunteers may have the opportunity to participate in a variety of administrative and fundraising support services. 

• Legal Intake 
  • Help provide free legal consultations to potential clients. Work directly with clients and attorneys to provide free consultations. Various shifts and times are available.
    • Intake Schedule:
      • Monday 1:00pm – 3:30pm
        Tuesday: 9:00am – 11:30am, 1:00pm – 3:30pm
        Thursday: 9:00am – 11:30am
        Friday: 9:00am – 11:30am

• Immigration Clinics
  • Clinics are hosted three to four times a month, on Fridays and one Saturday a month. here, volunteers will be able to work directly with clients to help fill out immigration benefit applications. This is a completely in-person position.
  • Volunteers for this role must be 18+.
  • Volunteers for this role must be located within the Bay Area and available to come to the office in-person for all shifts.

• Language Interpretation
  • Bilingual and multilingual volunteers are essential to our work here at ALA. Volunteers with proficient or fluent secondary-language skill are often asked to help with document translation, consultations, and interpretation. This is a mostly remote position, with few exceptions for client interpretation.

• Civic Engagement
  • Voter and election-related activities: voter registration and outreach, phonebanking, canvassing, poll monitoring, etc.
  • Tabling at local community events
  • AAPI Voices for Justice: community education and outreach to uplift AAPI voices locally in San Jose, CA and Santa Clara County.

ALA is hiring- 2024 Summer Law Clerk

Law clerks may have the opportunity to participate in various aspects of ALA services, including initial client contact, fact investigation, legal research and writing, drafting of pleadings and discovery materials and trial and hearing preparation. Law clerks may also assist the efforts of both the community education and community organizing programs. Law clerk qualifications:

1. A demonstrated concern for the needs of Asian and Pacific Islander communities.
2. A demonstrated concern for the needs of low-income people in general.
3. Student must have completed at least one year of law school before starting the position.
4. Bilingual skills in an Asian or Pacific Islander language highly desirable.
