Census Caravan in San Jose: August 29, 2020

It is patently unconstitutional not to count everyone in the census. Under Section 2 of the Fourteenth Amendment, “Representatives shall be apportioned among the several states according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each state, excluding Indians not taxed.” “Persons” means “persons,” and that means everyone. There are no exceptions for immigration status. The Constitution means what it says.

Census Day was April 1, 2020

We encourage everyone living in the U.S. to participate fully in the census.  Starting from mid-March, households in Santa Clara County should receive an invitation from the U.S. Census Bureau, with instructions on how to respond to the census online.  Information about language assistance will also be available.  You can also respond to the census by phone or by paper questionnaire.

Non-Response Follow-Up starting on August 11, 2020

If your household has not responded to the census, a census worker will visit your household in person starting from August 11, 2020.  You can verify the identity of the census worker as follows.

Census takers will:

  1. wear masks and follow local public health guidelines when they visit your home. (All census takers complete a virtual COVID-19 training on social distancing and other health and safety protocols before beginning their work in neighborhoods.)
  2. carry a valid ID badge issued by the U.S. Census Bureau.  The ID has a watermark of the Department of Commerce and expiration date.
  3. carry Census Bureau bags and other equipment with the Census Bureau logo.

Census takers will not ask for your social security number, bank account number, or credit card number.  They won’t ask you when you leave home for work or return home.  They won’t ask you for money or donation.  Nor will they ask you to support a political party or threaten you with jail.

If you are still not sure, you can call the Los Angeles Regional Office at (213)314-6500 to verify the authenticity of the visit and the identity of the census taker.
